Saturday's Guardian carries an interview with Ben Schott, in the course of which the interviewer wonders whether his attention to detail might be the tiniest bit - shall we say "obsessive"? He responds with this joke:
"Knock knock."
"Who's there?"
"Control freak. Now you say control freak who!"

That's the punch line, and I thought it was pretty good, so I passed it on to [livejournal.com profile] durham_rambler, with about as much explanation as I've given here:
[livejournal.com profile] shewhomust:"Knock knock."
[livejournal.com profile] durham_rambler:"Who's there?"
[livejournal.com profile] shewhomust:"Control freak. Now you say control freak who!"
[livejournal.com profile] durham_rambler (obediently): Control freak who?"

Clearly he sees nothing exceptional in this sort of instruction; he's well trained.

That's one of my favorite jokes; I've told it quite a bit recently.

The great thing about telling jokes is that there's always someone who hasn't heard them before: this time it was me.

And, amusingly enough, I did have a friend who responded the way your friend did.

It's the way she tells 'em.
