Durham is having a holes in the ground fest at the moment. As well as the massive hole dug by the gas company, there is a new little hole in front of the entrance to the covered market. This, [livejournal.com profile] durham_rambler explains, is part of the scheme to erect a memorial to the DLI in the Market Place. Before the Council can decide exactly where the statue should go, "Trial holes to determine precise ground conditions, including underground utilities," must be dug.

You might think that since Market Place has, within the last decade, been radically remodelled, including complete repaving, the Council would now have a map of what is where below the surface. Apparently not, which is why the hole is crossed by a substantial pipe, and the pipe has a neat hole in it, as if someone had hit it with a pickaxe.

Ah, well, try again...

Oh dear. I would ask about photos, but I suspect that they would just be too depressing. I've seen the marketplace torn up enough times to have a clear image of what it likely looks like. I was even there when they changed out the old cobbles for those absurd flat slippery modern-looking things. ::sigh::

I miss Durham.

Yes; one of the problems is that statues are restricted to the edges of the Marketplace, to keep that big empty space in the middle...

And Durham misses you, honey.

I'm keeping a wary eye on the river, but we are getting off very lightly so far.
