The instructions:

  1. Grab the nearest book (of at least 123 pages).

  2. Open the book to page 123.

  3. Find the fifth sentence (grab next nearest book if fewer than 7 sentences found).

  4. Post the text of the next 3 sentences on your blog along with these instructions.

  5. Don't you dare dig for that "cool" or "intellectual" book in your closet! I know you were thinking about it! Just pick up whatever is closest.

The result:
"Keria Gauthy's been wanting to have it taken out for years, but Ker Gauthy won't agree. He says it has historic significance, and Jeremias agrees with him."
"I imagine he does," I said.

Aptly enough, it's from The Virtu, by Sarah Monette ([livejournal.com profile] truepenny). And even more aptly, it's [livejournal.com profile] desperance's copy, sitting by my desk, waiting to be written up in my book diary and returned to him...

And I recognised it. From the 'Keria' and 'Ker' I think. I enjoyed Virtu and Melusine immensely - the voices worked for me and the characters carried on conversations in my head after I'd finished.

I've just tried this meme and I get "If you have string values that you want to sort in some non-lexicographic order, consider using an ENUM column". The books nearest my desk are not fun.

You and [livejournal.com profile] durham_rambler both: he got the Rights of Way guide (http://durham-rambler.livejournal.com/3576.html): I admit that the question is clearly designed for people who have one place that is their own, in which they keep desk and books and all - not for those of us who spread over an entire house...

And yes, I enjoyed both Mélusine and The Virtu, in slightly different ways, but I didn't want to put either one down until I'd finished it...

Ah, this is my workspace. Computing books only within reach. Walking guides are behind the desk at about foot level, and all the fun and interesting books glimmer at me enticingly from across the room.
