We left Ely this motning, driving through the fens in bright cold sunshine, wishing we'd had this weather yesterday: we went to the Maid's Head for lunch, but it would have been nice to combine that with a short walk, instead of a dash from the car park to the door, through the rain. Ah, well. There will be other days.

There was no snow lying on the fens, but the A1 ran through snowy landscapes up through the middke of England (from Wittering to the M62, pretty much). We saw the last of the snow as the sun sank behind us in a blaze of flame below the horizon, and after that the sky was streaked with pink until the light finally faded.

No snow in Durham, but a heavy frost. Our road was icy and treacherous, and that wasn't late - we were home about five. It's going to be a cold night.

Frost and ice sounds like Canberra. I guess it's life on the heights. I hate black ice with a direness that always surprises me.

Black ice is very unpleasant. And sneaky. Snow is pretty, but black ice has no redeeming features.

I'm glad you're safely home. That sounds like a pretty but unnerving journey.

No, truly, the snow was purely decorative, we did most of it by daylight, the only unnerving bit was getting from the car to the front door - hands full, I tried to bump the car door closed, and felt myself moving while the door stayed still.

I hope you had fun on your birthday?

I'm relieved to hear that the drive itself was safe.

I had a very pleasant birthday, thanks. I treated myself to eggs florentine in a Moroccan restaurant on Tower Bridge Road (very close to the steak place), and then as it was such a lovely day I decided to walk to Canary Wharf to go to the cinema and do some shopping. And then came home to loads of birthday messages on facebook which was cheering.

Oh dear. Every time we visit you (and climb that hill on foot) I wonder/worry about how you will manage in the snow and slipp'ry. I know that you've lived there forever and are quite well used to it, thank you very much. But still, I worry.

Now I'm embarrassed, because - as you well know - none of this is winter as you know it in New England...

Went for the last swim of the year this morning, scraping the ice of the car before dawn. But no problems, all's well.
