D. is with us for a few days: there was a long-standing plan that he would attend a family party in Leeds, then come on to us, and take the opportunity to try to visit Richard. As it turned out, we went instead to Richard's funeral, but D. came north after his party anyway, and he and I spent this afternoon mooching around Durham. We dropped in on the new(ish) archaeology gallery on Palace Green, and by the time we came out it was dusk, and the sky beyond the Cathedral was blazing scarlet. Naturally I didn't have my camera with me.

Cathedral

So D. took this with his camera. You'll just have to imagine that it's much brighter and much redder.

And that's quite a compensation!

Please tell more about the archaeology gallery. Somehow, I missed knowing/remembering to see it when we were visiting...

The Archaeology Museum used to be in the old Fulling Mill by the river (there's still a signpost pointing that way on Windy Gap). Was it still there when you lived here?

Anyway, they've closed that, and made a new display in the old library on Palace Green. Probably worth dropping in if you have time, but nothing to get excited about (this 'jug' is pretty, though (http://discover.durham.ac.uk/primo_library/libweb/action/display.do?tabs=detailsTab&ct=display&fn=search&doc=44DUR_ADLIB_DS49733&indx=3&recIds=44DUR_ADLIB_DS49733&recIdxs=2&elementId=2&renderMode=poppedOut&displayMode=full&frbrVersion=&dscnt=0&frbg=&scp.scps=scope%3A%2844DUR_ADLIB_DS%29&tab=default_tab&dstmp=1418725333141&srt=rank&mode=Basic&&dum=true&vl%28freeText0%29=roman%20jug&vid=44DUR_VU1&gathStatIcon=true)).

That kind of sky can be amazing, here it has been doing Scandinavian-like colours for a few days but is now covering itself up with wet clouds and fog. Sometimes the other side of the river simply is gone. Maybe more winter pastels for Christmas, then. That castle is not a bad-looking one.

It is a very castle-like cathedral, isn't it? There's a poem that calls it "half church of God, half castle 'gainst the Scots..."

I honestly thought it was a truecastle, I wasn't trying to be funny. For once...should have taken a closer look to the left;) But, as you say, quite castleish for a cathedral. Gobbledygooks quote and finds out, that 't was done by Scott; well done Scott.
