After the flood

By the time I went out shopping this morning, the Wear was back within its banks, and the sequence of weirs in the river were visible. The riverside footpath was passable, though I had to step over a tree trunk to walk away from the shops. A couple of lads were washing and sweeping the mud off the terrace outside In Shanghai, and there were cars parked all along Framwelgate Waterside, as if it hadn't been under water yesterday. There's a fine nest of debris caught on the weir, with a lifebelt in among it, just in case, and a few minutes after I took this photograph the first of the cormorants had returned, perching cautiously on the highest protruding branch.

D. drove down from Lindisfarne without mishap.

So it's all back to normal. But the sky is an ominous grey - and what will happen when yesterday's rains wash down from Weardale?

Wow, that is impressive. It's a shame you missed your holiday, but you were so smart to wait out the weather at home.

IT'S DURHAM

::so happy to see a pic of something so dear and familiar since I'm now living in a new place and everything is strange again::

Only a few months now...and we'll get to see Framwellgate Bridge in person. :-)

Of course I thought of you when I posted this!

Boston is strange? Really?

The part of Boston that I'm staying in is strange; it's south of the city and not the same neighborhood as I lived in 'lo those many moons ago. But the person from whom I'm renting a room is Tribe and I've known him for years. He had his girlfriend and best friend over for dinner last night and I had Scott over and we all had a fine time. Yay for Social Goodness!

This weekend I need to go to NY for a funeral, but starting next week I'll plan a bit more o'the Social. Being sociable and seeing friends is just a matter of crossing Boston, either by car or mass transit. And yet, such a crossing takes over an hour (at least) each way. It's very much like traversing London...

Should you and R ever decide to visit Boston, I hope that you'll stay with us. This is of course assuming that we'll be living here properly by then, not merely renting for a temporary job.

Having read your latest post, what can I say? I'm astonished at how badly you've been treated by a company that relies on your professional skills to make its fat profits...

We have been to Boston, several times, as we have friends in Wellesley - but yes, it would be good to see you in your natural habitat, wherever that may be at any given time!

The previous day was even more amazing, but less inviting for going out and taking pictures!
