A quick one for the record:

At the pool this morning, I was relieved to see a notice saying that in an attempt to satisfy all customers, music will be played Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday 2 - 4, and Wednesday and Thursday 9 - 11. That's fine by me; I was ready to adjust my schedule to avoid the music. We stopped by the desk to say how pleased we were they'd resolved this, and was everyone happy now?

Hah! And then I reached the point in the changing rooms where I could hear the music coming through from the pool (don't know the exact time, but eightish, say) - luckily, while still fully dressed, so I could go back to the desk and say, er... And the attendant reacted immediately, and went rushing through to the poolside to tell them to stop it.

Which ought all be fine and dandy. A couple of blokes started with the "we want music", "I'll bring a drum in..." and came and told me that they wanted music, that there was nothing wrong with a little background music and that it wasn't right that the music should be stopped because one person didn't like it*... After which I got paranoid, and kept hearing snatches of conversation and thinking it was about the music; well, OK, the bloke singing "Turn the radio on...", that probably was about the music, but mostly I don't suppose it was. There weren't many students in, and it should have been a pleasant morning to swim, and I'm not as relaxed as I should be...

But with luck the arrangement will work out.

*If only. If the pool management jumped to my say-so, the University wouldn't have exclusive use of four lanes for three hours, five mornings a week.

Are you seriously saying, you can´t even have a quiet swim without muzak terror invading your ears, in a public place? Why don´t those people swim with their i-pods on, who are so keen on it? Should be more interesting; electrical devices and water: always clean good fun! And more variety, too.

Un-frakkin-believable. These kids need to grow up and deal with the fact that there are other people in the world besides them.

Go you for sticking to your guns. This is a public swimming pool after all. If the kids want music they now have clear times during which music can be played. Everyone needs to accommodate, on both sides of the issue.

You've been so much more patient and gentle about this than I would have been.

Not so much with the kids. Well, yes, this starts with the lifeguards wanting their music while they work, but my fellow swimmers are my age. And they're the ones who are giving me a hard time.

Ah. So they were just *acting* like children? One could see why I would have made that assumption. ;-/

An easy mistake to make!

Is this a public pool? Does it actually have a music licence? I find it very odd, in these cash-strapped times if a local authority is spending money on public performance rights. I'd certainly ask my local councillor about it.

This is a very good question, and a line I've been pursuing - but how do you find out if someone has a PRS license? (Ask them, yes, and then ask to see it, I suppose...)
