Crash landing
Oct. 17th, 2006 07:39 pmWhile we were away, there was an outage at our ISP. We already knew this because
desperance had posted about it, but when we returned, we learned that
samarcand had spent an entire afternoon re-uniting clients with their e-mail (for which we owe you, big time,
samarcand) and that our ISP had implemented some changes, for perfectly good reasons of security, but which meant that instead of resuming work in a structured manner,
durham_rambler had to leap in at the deep end and start rewriting code.
By Sunday, the bulk of this was in hand if not complete: but when
durham_rambler went to start work, he discovered that our broadband connection was down again. Since we had reported no faults for two weeks, BT had closed the file on the problem (yes, I know going on holiday is supposed to make your problems vanish...) and are treating this outage as a whole new problem. We've been without broadband since Sunday, and are promised a site visit tomorrow morning.
Finally, when I went to switch on my computer, I discovered that the monitor was dead. It had been fine the previous night, when I left Windows installing updates and allowed it to switch itself off, but it was now completely defunct. (I'll spare you the bit about how it had rung down the curtain and gone to join the choir invisibule - you can do that yourselves, if you feel it's required). Fortunately, we have plenty of spares...
And that's three: so can we start afresh, now, please?
