I just don't get cocktails

According to last night's news, on his visit to the Palace, President Macron was served a cocktail of English gin and French pastis. This was reported to demonstrate the entente cordiale, but it sounds medicinal to me.

Also, gin? Isn't that traditionally from Holland?

Yes, traditional Gin, (Genever) is Dutch although it's nothing like 'English' gin.

The current fashion for gin seems to be that it is whatever you want it to be - though I still can't omagine what might combine well with pastis. Rhubarb, maybe?
