The centre aisle of Lidl is full of surprises.

I was hoping to replace my potato masher, but I have come home with a toaster.

I have taken the advice of those readers who suggested this solution to my complaints about my new cookerm and we shall see how we get on - but not tomorrow, becaise Lidl also sells the best croissants, so tomorrow there will be croissants for breakfast.

It's a Breville, which was a name I recognised, and it claomed to have extra-wide slots, which was promising. Also, it wasn't expensive - so it seemed a good way to find out whether I could adjust to using a toaster.

Unboxed, it feels quite flimsy. It struggles to toast my home-baked loaf - I'm gradually turning the dial up, and we shall see ...
