D. and [personal profile] valydiarosada were with us for the early part of this week, their habitual New Year visit deferred because [personal profile] valydiarosada had covid. They brought with them a return of that pre-Christmas cold snap, arriving in a flurry of snow.

We weren't at all certain that we'd be able to keep our date with D.'s sister for lunch on Sunday: she lives in Alston, in the high Pennines. In fact the weather was cold and bright, and the drive up into the hills was a delight. The green fields of Weardale spread to either side and the white summits ahead of us, and gradually as we climbed higher we could see that whiteness as a lacy sprinkling over the fields, emphasising the field boundaries. Then over the summit, and the snow lying thicker along the roadside as we came down through Nenthead, disappearing as we came down into Alston.

Less happily, it was also [personal profile] valydiarosada who came down to breakfast with the news that Les Barker had died. "Les Barker, football fan and poet" says the BBC - I think he'd have liked that.

Still icy last night, and I refused to walk down the hill to the pub quiz, so we took the car. But it is gradually clearing.

Shame about Les- a genuinely nice and funny guy.
