shewhomust: (bibendum)

We took the coast road from Carantec to Morlaix, not a long drive but a very pretty one, even at low tide with the sun gleaming on an expanse of mud, the little boats moored along the narrow channel running along the center of the bay. Then, as you come into Morlaix, it's all change: the river is dammed, and suddenly you are driving alongside a marina, with the viaduct as a dramatic backdrop. I'd have been happy to spend some time strolling alongside, but that'll have to wait for another visit: today we parked just before the viaduct, where, as on our previous visit, a fair was setting up. We strolled past, admiring the old houses, the open square, the municipal flowerbeds and a street of quirky shops (including La Mandragore, which seemed to be exclusively dedicated to Harry Potter) and came, under a darkening sky, to the grandest of the old houses, the 'Maison de la duchesse Anne'. When in doubt, the Bretons attribute their historica buildings to Duchess Anne, as other nations do to Mary Queen of Scots or King Arthur... By this time it was very nearly raining, so we turned back, past more half-timbered shops, pursued by the sound of thunder. Eventually, when we were nearly there, [personal profile] durham_rambler suggested I take shelter in the bandstand while he fetched the car:

Caught in the rain

One flash of lightning followed almost immediately by a toll of thunder had me wondering whether this was a good idea ...

Back on the road, and heading for our overnight destination in Dinan, after an hour or so we were ready for a break, so followed the sign off the route nationale which offered us a village with shops and refreshments. Somehow we managed to miss it, and drove for some distance south - that is, out of our way; we are becoming more relaxed about using up the charge on the car! - until we came to the completely unknown (to us) town of Quintin. Like anywhere in France on Sunday lunchtime, it was very quiet, but the café was welcoming, and served us bowls of home-made leek and potato soup. Afterwards we took the shortest of strolls around the town, so have some more half-timbered houses, this time with a detectable wash of blue in the sky:

Any street corner

And now we are in Dinan, our last stop of the trip...
