Goodbye, LJ

I have just deleted my LiveJournal account. (I think. Can it really be that easy?)

I didn't do it sooner because -

Well, hello, this is me. I don't let go easily. We had some good times together, and it took me a while to make the switch to Dreamwidth. I kept my LJ because crossposting seemed like a good way of staying in touch with folks there, and I was using a backup programme linked to that account. Neither crossposting nor that backup are now working (and it does look as if that's because of something LJ has done). So there's that.

This will cause broken links in some older posts, which were interlinked. I've been switching those to DW links when I came across them - another reason I was in no hurry to delete my LJ. My apologies to anyone frustrated by this.

This is not some grand gesture of boycott: that would be silly. It's just a piece of housekeeping that I should have got round to earlier.

I shut my account on April 4, 2017. By now, it seems odd to me that people are still active at Livejournal. One of my friends is in despair at how her community has gone away over the last five years, but still she will not leave because she hates DW and Facebook and everywhere else we went. I am sorry for her. There were a lot of good years for me on weblogs, then at Livejournal, and now my good years are chiefly at Facebook, though I value everyone who reads my ordinary days at DW.

I stopped using my LJ journal on the same date (never accepted those terms of service), but didn't nuke it because there are extant links to some of those posts that I didn't want to break. But now, almost five years later, maybe it's time to decide not to care any more.

There is one person I know who still posts only there, despite my urging relocation. Here, too, it might be time to stop letting that hold me there.

LJ was my first online community, but I came to realize that things change with online activity just like everything else ... nothing stays the same, so you have to move with the times. If you don't, eventually the times move for you.

*Nodding*

I understand completely. It was like that for me too.
