Oh, Mr Porter!
Oct. 26th, 2021 05:44 pmOn our way to tomorrow's funeral, and meanwhile here we are in Crewe: more precisely in the ibis hotel in the business park on the edge of Crewe.
Well, yes, I meant to do that. Having been caught out before by trying to break a long drive somewhere pleasant, and ending up with several days of long drives, I deliberately booked somewhere anonymous and close to the motorway. I know nothing about Crewe, except that it is - or was once - a major railway junction, and somewhere you might end up when you wanted to go to Birmingham... It crops up in another railway related song, too, but the less said about that, the better. No doubt Crewe has its points of interest - and we passed signs to the Sandbach Crosses not faar away, which we may visit on our way home - but tourist sights are not what we were looking for.
Anyway, the strategy has more or less worked out. The journey was fine, with dramatic skies, all dark clouds and sun almost breaking through. And the hotel is comfortable enough, or will be when we have sorted out the lighting: one of the wall lights (the nearest the room has to central lighting) isn't working, and there is no bulb in the desk light. We have had a cup of tea, and
durham_rambler has twisted his bedside light round to give me some illumination on my keyboard, and we are told that maintenance (who seem to have gone home at five o' clock) will fix things tomorrow.
