Coming to us live from Hilversum, because the intended venue in Rotterdam has been remodelled as a hospital. So, no fancy staging, no tourist videos showing the contestants having fun in the host country and, best of all, no voting. Which gives us time to bring you all 40 videos, none of this semi-finals nonsene! You'd think, wouldn't you? But no, they've padded it out with chat, and previous winners and a deep and meaningful message from each act, and by the time all that's been accommodated, there's only time for 30 seconds of each.

There aren't many songs that can make an impact in those conditions. Russia has opted for the quirky; Azerbaijan went into the desert to sing about Cleopatra: Latvia's video is demonstrating restaurant theatrics (all that stuff with the silver dish-covers) -

- OK, that's different. 30 seconds of the Serbian entry (which you'd call Eurovision-by-numbers if you were being kind, embarrassing if you weren't) followed by a song from the entry streets of Belgrade: it seems to be 'Molitva', with which Serbia won the contest in 2007:

A strong song and an interesting video: I wasn't expecting that. We now return you to our scheduled programming -

- we'd already seen and enjoyed the Icelandic video, but I can now say that Iceland definitely wins Best Message From The Artist; and now we have Montaigne representing Australia (what? why?); while I was typing that, Ukraine came on, and completely caught my attention - I'll be having another look at that one, if only because how often do you hear someone singing in Ukrainian? Also, great frock! (Video here, but refusing to play correctly; problem may be at my end, of course.)

That's all, folks! It ends with the promise that there will be Eurovision Song Contest next year, in Rotterdam. Will there? Who knows?
