At eight o'clock, feeling a little sheepish, we stepped outside our front door to applaud all the people who are keeping us going: the doctirs and the nurses, the teachers and the pharmacists and the milkmen ... Since the University sent its students home for an extended Easter break, half the houses in the street are empty; I was surprised how many people I could see, and even more surprised just how audible it was. No banging on saucepans, just lots of applause, and one loud bang when someone let off a firework (I suspect I know who: there's one household that will seize any excuse for fireworks).
