At eight o'clock, feeling a little sheepish, we stepped outside our front door to applaud all the people who are keeping us going: the doctirs and the nurses, the teachers and the pharmacists and the milkmen ... Since the University sent its students home for an extended Easter break, half the houses in the street are empty; I was surprised how many people I could see, and even more surprised just how audible it was. No banging on saucepans, just lots of applause, and one loud bang when someone let off a firework (I suspect I know who: there's one household that will seize any excuse for fireworks).

Then it started to rain, so we came in again.

I like the pretty lights, but if all you get is a big bang, not so much ...

We weren't even aware it was happening until we saw neighbours outside.

Although we DO now have a bear in our window! :o)

Whereas I've come across lots of publicity for the clapping (and if you missed this weekm it looks as if it's going to be a regular thing) but hadn't heard about the bears. Not that we have a windowsill for a bear to sit on, anyway.
