This morning I have hung up the phone on:

• a recorded voice which claims that Amazon is about to debit my account in payment for a Prime subscription,


• a recorded voice which threatens that my internet connection is about to be terminated because of suspicious activity at my ISP address,


• and an actual person (though I don't believe him when he says his name is Stanley) who wants to extend the warranty on my washing machine.

This does not include the call I missed because it stopped ringing before I reached the phone (for all I know, that might be someone I wanted to talk to).

We got that amazon one but not much gets through as BT provide a quit useful call blocking system. We don't actually use Prime.

We are registered with the preference service, but it isn't wisely observed: does yours actually block nuisance calls?

I have twice had a month's free trial of Prime (the second time inadvertently): so thia would be more plausible than most such calls, if I had ever given Amazon my phone number...

We're on TPS too but BT tracks known nuisances and if they occur, they get sent to a spam message box.

It isn't 100% but it does pretty well.

Nothing new here, but such a perfect selection - though not truly representative, as none of them hung up on me, which is another common one!

Calls from actual people are so rare. Calls from actual people who are honest about who they are are even more rare. Such is "progress", I guess. Remember when computers didn't even make phone calls?
