Afternoon (television) delight.
Dec. 21st, 2017 04:57 pmYesterday's Poem of the Day came from an unexpected source: Countdown. The current guest in Dictionary Corner is Rufus Hound, a pleasant surprise, as I'd enjoyed his first visit, but that was so long ago that I'd tired of complaining that he hadn't been invited back. Well, evidently they were saving him up for the final. Once again, his spot consists of a poem written for the occasion. Mostly these are funny, and that's their whole point, but yesterday's had something to say. It begins:
The language is simple but effective, the rhymes are pointed and the scansion close enough, but what quoting a few lines can't show you is the way the argument builds, pivots, and concludes. You'll just have to read the whole thing.
I've a very low opinion of people at the moment
Myself included, I am not exempt
For whilst person by person we seem just fine
As a species we've earnt nothing but contempt.
