We were later than usual at the pool yesterday morning. Not much later, just the time it took to scrape the frost off the car, but enough that we werejust leaving as the primary school children were arriving. They were in their Christmas finery: nothing excessive, but a red Santa bonnet here, a tinsel edging there, plenty of red coats. Most eye-catching: a hat with a sort of roof-tile pattern, 'Merry Christmas' written on it, and a pair of booted legs waving out of the summit (or chimney, I suppose). Most effective use of understatement: a knitted elf cap, in green and red stripes, complete with a pair of pink knitted pointed ears.

Today we went shopping in heavy rain, which turned to sleet and carried on turning. We emerged from the covered market to find it snowing heavily, and it continued to snow for the rest of the adternoon. The weather forecast knew nothing of this, and informed us that we were experiencing heavy rain, with snow on the higher ground.

We interpret this as meaning that the roads are not being cleared, and decided not to risk the trip to Newcastle tonight, which is why we are at home now and not out partying.

Even bags and helmets are growing ears nowadays; best ones I ever saw were on the back of a vespa in Italy with the tiny wearer holding onto its cool mum (whose helmet was redhorn-adorned) while the ones on the backpack were part of an animal clutching the kid and furry, too. It was quite cute albeit extremely silly but had no immediate Christmas meaning or else traditions have truly gone astray. The weather forecast here often adapts in retrospect so as (practical-mindedly) having forecasted what then happened and I must admit, it must be easier to forecast that way when one can be sure of what is going on out there, in the wild. Here, there is the all-weekly Short People invasion complete with trumpets and saxphones but there is also wine to solace one's soul so all is well in casa Mollberg, especially when all have finally gone to bed but then the party starts outside and on top...

I covet those animal backpacks - I wish they made them in grown-up sizes.

Will you have Short People over Christmas?

So did I after seeing them first time in front of us in a waiting line along, after all, the Côte d'Azur to go to San Remo, fav. hang-out of expats, and of course they were both (mother&child) that cute themselves so it only added to the experience.

Think, as The Wicked StepMoza, I'm entitled to said Experience;=)

Frost, sleet, snow: you live in such an exotic place. it's just over 21 degrees here, and delightfully sunny. If yuo make it in time, there will be doughnuts waiting for you.
