We are here, arrived, in France: that's about all, really.

The storm in the channel failed to materialise. We had a nasty scare when my new notebook refused to talk to the wi-fi at the hotel last night, but it was fine on the ferry, and it seems fine now. It took us longer than we had intended to drive the length of the Cotentin peninsula, but it's partly our own fault for not taking the motorway - and we are unrepentant, because it was all lovely green scenery and trees and fields of maize, and lunch at the seaside...

And now we are in Pontorson, at the deeply historic Hotel Montgomery (home of the Comte de Montgomery who accidentally killed Henri II in a jousting accident, as described in La Princesse de Clèves). Tomorrow we will detour the 10k to the Mont Saint Michel, because we can.

But first, bed (and book).

For this region where the weather is next to perfect, at least according to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Spirit_of_the_Laws of Monsieur https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montesquieu Baron de la Brede, whose estate happens to be situated reasonably nearby, we have ordered some smooth sunshine at roundabout +20°C for Sunday and Monday. Afterwards we probably get the next tsunami but at this very moment, all is calm and as it should be in this next to best part of the world where, as everyone knows, God lives (for Mireille Mathieu sang about it), too. Btw, M. Cro Magnon who does believe in neither, nevertheless offers to introduce visitors to la cuisine de Sud-Ouest on monday when all other chefs close their outlets.

Meanwhile, I suggest stroking your lapdog gently for my father whose love for machines was mutual and most rewarding (I have not inherited this gift); said this always helps when they are 'disgruntled' for they too, suffer abdominal pains and whatnot. This concerned several oldtimers that he thus made carry us calmly through the Northern hemisphere, stuffed to the brim with grans and Short People but fear not, now I am mature although I'm told I look like a teenager still but that's just the silly face which is not my fault. On occasion Mollberg Speak gets all coherent!

Missed Mont StMichel at passing by years ago myself but worry not, we've got our own towers of power some of which are open to sightseeing&climbing.

I am delighted that we shall meet M. Cro Magnon! I hadn't dared ask. This is very, very kind of him...

...in Blaye, don't miss the Maison du Vin, they're really good; advice offered unobtrusively on demand only; the shelves filled with local produce starting at most reasonable prices sold by bottle or box.
The best viennoiseries are to be found at a tiny boulangerie just to the side of Le Petit Port, we saw all the locals go there and not to the other so made our conclusions from that!
For lunch, if you are considering eating there, don't take the touristy citadel establishments nice as they may look for the real thing is downtown (shorteish walk down the impressive moats;) and simply called Le Petit Port where even M. Cro Magnon was satisfied with their menu. Toadilou must now sleep then clean this dump and do everything;)
