If Jackie Kay, presenting Radio 4's Pick of the Week, had not mentioned it, I would not have known that today is also the hundredth anniversary of the birth of Ewan MacColl. I don't doubt that they would have been happy to share a celebration, and there'd be some fine songs sung at it. Here's just one of them:

ETA: [livejournal.com profile] durham_rambler points out that we also overlooked Bob Copper's centenary earlier this month...

Today's Observer has quite a feature on him, with appreciations (and not!) from several figures from the folk world.

Thanks for that link - I hadn't seen it. My, Shirley Collins didn't like him, did she? And a celebratory tour to look out for, later this year...

I'm very surprised at Shirley Collins - she generally doesn't have a hard word to say about anyone. Still - I'm prepared to believe that Ewan could be quite a handful - a much-missed one, though.

Oh, I'm quite ready to believe that what she said was true and justified - it's just not the place I'd have chosen to say it!

But it's possible that she *didn't* choose - it's not unknown for the press to take a piece off the file and run it in the wrong context.

I think the Guardian listed several 'interviewers' credited at the bottom of the whole presentation.

Parcel o' rogues is my other half's favourite short Scottish ballad. Andrew Lammie aka the Trumpeter of Fyvie is his favourite muckle sang.

Oh this is just lovely. Beautiful tune and lovely singing.

I have his version of "Turpin Hero," about the highwayman Dick Turpin.
