Crash landing
May. 25th, 2014 05:38 pmThere's still one last day of holiday to write about: no major excursions, but full of small pleasures. And the journey home went smoothly, too. After which -
For some reason I had a bad night on Friday: this happens occasionally, and mostly I can pin it down to eating too richly, or too late, or reacting to something specific that I've eaten. I used to have a digestion of iron, but this is no longer the case - increasing age or side effects of medication, who knows? From time to time I have a night of indigestion and sleeping badly, and then I'm fine - if a bit sleepy - the morning after. This one was worse: indigestion plus feeling sick, and still feeling fragile the morning after (still not one hundred per cent today, but nearly). It's no big deal, and many of the people I know have it much worse, all the time - but I felt particularly affronted. The holidays are over, I'm back home, and this is the welcome I get?
Fragile or no, yesterday was the start of a bank holiday weekend, we'd been away, time to go shopping. I went to check what there was in the freezer and discovered that the rim of frost had gone from around the cabinet; the motor was running but the contents were no longer entirely frozen. This, too, could have been much worse: I had been trying to empty the freezer, so that we could carry out a long overdue defrosting. Well, now I know what happens if you put that off for too long... Is it repairable? Neither of us is inclined to grapple with that question: and if
durham_rambler isn't trying to find a mechanic, to patch up the old rather than replace it, then I'm pretty sure the answer must be no, anyway. So we have ordered a replacement, which will be delivered, and the carcase removed, on Friday afternoon. We're going for another chest freezer, but a smaller one - though, irritatingly, it is marginally larger in the two external dimensions where I would really have appreciated it being smaller (height, and distance it will project from the wall).
Meanwhile, we are attempting to use up as much as possible of the contents. J has very kindly agreed to come round after church and help us eat things. I wonder how much I can persuade her to take away with her?
