We went shopping in Durham in the rain, and came home with golden beetroot and purple potatoes.

Also with purple beetroot, and white-with-golden(ish)-skins potatoes, but that's less interesting.

And English asparagus - perhaps it is spring, despite the rain.

If they're those tiny purple potatoes (And not a yam) then I often cook them by shallow-frying thick slices with olive oil and chilli and drizzling with fresh lime juice. And it's not possible to be hungry for them at 4ish am, but I am (also insomniac, obviously)

They are little purple potatoes: I usually boil them and make potato salad, but if there are any left over they are delicious frizzled up in butter, so maybe I should explore the frying option more thoroughly - your version sounds good (I should have bought a lime. The limes looked juicy, and I was tempted, but I had quite a lot of lemons...)

I do that thing with limes and lemons all the time! (And I meant thin slices, not thick - I ought to be asleep, but my body says "Doing too much, time to be alert at unholy hours"

Golden beetroot and carrots make a great soup.

I have some carrots.

I was thinking of making soup with the ordinary beets and some rhubarb.

Soup good!

It was delicious.

I used to work in an office with very mixed nationalities, and the food discussions were always interesting. There was a big debate over asparagus: green or white?

(Green, obviously).

I love both.

Asperges Vinaigrette should be white.

My French cook bought fresh strawberries from Spain that were edible. The latter is not the news, but the former. Normally, he´d never buy anything out of season that is not fresh from the market, aka d´ici as far as possible. Call him a snob, the kids and me loved having strawberries for that feeling of spring nearing. No, not great in taste, yet. But still. Also, I love food in strange colours. Blue, in particular.

I had some Welsh strewberries last week - full of flavour. Strawberries in March, it isn't right...

Oh, where in Durham do you find your green grocer? The indoor market?

No, it's Robinsons (http://www.robinsonsgreengrocers.co.uk/) in the North Road (opposite the Bus Station).

Robinson's! Of course! That was my other guess, but I'd wondered if there were a special farmer's market happening in the town center.

I'm glad to hear that Robinson's is still there. I think that their selection and pricing was always so much better than the grocer in the market or Tesco's/M&S. I'd get my produce from Robinson's whenever possible, but as we were on Hallgarth St, sometimes it was just quicker to grab what we needed from nearer by.

Plus, they were wonderful to me when I had cravings for chestnuts; they sold me several kilo-bags in season. I think that they were amused by my entreaties.

PS - I just looked at their website. If they'd been offering free delivery when we lived there, I would have gotten watermelons...
