I can help with the gingerbread. Denser varieties (very 19th century variety - I have recipes) can be baked on paper that's the shape and size of the final product, to held them together. German gingerbread is still baked on edible paper, and it's closer to that texture.
I bought a half a stick of gold sealing wax, once. I might still have it.
I don't think the tasks were as clear-cut in a smallish household as to prevent Mary Poppins from doing some shopping, though I entirely agree that it grows from a message into something absurd.
And those broken fingers still give me the creeps...
