the last talk ... was by a woman who is an official Cornish village witch. It was suggested to her as a formal profession by the local Job Centre, and she's signed up with the Inland Revenue. She gets tax back for candles (as do we), but they wouldn't allow cat food. I am, BTW, quite serious. She gets on very well with the local vicar and there have been some joint ceremonies, which is a refreshing change - or maybe it isn't. 'Witch and vicar agree to differ: get along famously' is not the most sensational headline, after all. And the village Christmas Lights committee chose to mark her cottage with a purple neon witch on a broomstick. The lighthouse keeper got a neon lighthouse, natch. Cassandra said she didn't think it was very Christmassy, but the committee replied that they believed in celebrating diversity.

I think that's cool. In fact, I would so rather read that news item on a Monday morning than yet more drear about the $%^!#s in Washington getting away with more criminal action.
