Five things

- Killhope Lead Mining museum has a fine collection of spar boxes: lead miners would bring home, illicitly, the 'bonny bits' of mineral they found alongside the lead seam, and construct cabinets to display them, much as a gentleman might create a grotto in the grounds of his home. The museum catalogue illustrates all of their collection, though the photographs aren't very good.
- An unexpected version of Northwest Passage, with a fine collection of illustrations:
- Unimpressed by last night's Doctor Who: losts of running around but a severe shortage of story. Always a pleasure to spot David Warner, though.
- Also at Killhope, an exhibition by a quartet of textile artists calling themselves IT HAPPENS. Some fine quilts, including Gate, by Anne Tuck
- Happy anniversary, Mr and Mrs Brenchley: the first anniversary is paper. What gifts could the two of you possibly give each other that are made of paper? (Soon this joke will be impossible, because you won't automatically think 'paper = books'. Perhaps you already don't...)

Date: 2013-04-14 09:39 pm (UTC)*We went to a SETI talk on Friday about Martian water in one of the extremely large craters. The talk was very poor, but one thing I really enjoy is listening to the people talking around us before the lectures. These are all grizzled space scientists who've been studying all of this for years. Their discussions about work include things like what they're planning to recommend for a 2015 mission to an asteroid. Much cooler than my job.
