A fairly significant weekend
Mar. 13th, 2012 08:59 pmYesterday was
durham_rambler's birthday, and a fairly significant birthday at that. We had considered doing something special to celebrate it: a party, maybe, because it's too long since we had a party, or a short break somewhere, because we both enjoyed my birthday trip to Antrim last year. But somehow we never got round to organising either of these things, and the weekend started to be staked out by dates of other people's choosing. It's been a four-day weekend filled with activities only a minority of which were in any way birthday treats, but most of which felt thematically appropriate. Or perhaps that's just me...
- There was the invitation we couldn't turn down
- on Friday, when we spent the day helping
desperance pack up his belongings, in the company of Simon Morden and his amazing children. And in a sense there were goody bags to take home from the party (
durham_rambler made three round trips with car-loads of filing cabinets, not to mention the wine rack and a sourdough starter, and a bottle or so of whisky, which is always a good gift for a
durham_rambler). - There was the unmistakable sign of getting older,
- though this was mine, not his: our actual birthday treat was an appointment at the Eye Infirmary to make a date for my cataract surgery (mid-May)
- There was a birthday lunch - or two:
- on Sunday we joined the Northern Chapter of the Crime Writers' Association for lunch in Boroughbridge, a very sociable affair with old friends and new. Yesterday after we'd been to the hospital we took ourselves to lunch at the National Glass Centre, watching the Wear flow by and eating big chips.
- There was a birthday treat
- a movie, Visages d'Enfants, a 1925 Franco-Swiss silent, shown in the church hall with live piano accompaniment - an excellent film, but marred as a treat by the fact that the person who had invited us was in the end too unwell to join us (mostly fatigue, I think, she seemed much better when we dropped in on Sunday afternoon)
- There was buying ourselves something exciting and extravagant:
- a trip to California for the wedding of
desperance and
klwilliams! With bonus rail trip! Yes, I am very excited about this...
