Party leftovers
Apr. 25th, 2011 09:16 pmDespite all my intentions - to slope off with
durham_rambler and celebrate my birthday somewhere quiet, just the two of us - we ended up having a party on Saturday, not a big elaborate do, but an invitation to friends who lived within dropping in distance to - well, to drop in. And they did, and I had a delightful afternoon with friends and conversation and drink and suchlike. And unexpected presents, too.
And then yesterday there were leftovers. And there's something additionally pleasing about leftovers. Not to underplay the joys of the party itself, but you work for a party - you clean the house and prepare food - and then you have the party, which is the reward for the effort you've put in. So leftovers feel like an unearned bonus.
We had leftover guests:
valydiarosada and D. came up from London, and stayed over so that D. could visit his mother; and Sue WINOLJ couldn't get to the party as her windscreen wipers failed just as she was setting off, so she came to lunch yesterday instead, and
valydiarosada and I explained to her about the joys of LJ, and why we label her as "WINOLJ".
There was leftover food and drink, which results in some interesting food and wine combinations. The lesson to learn is: less cake, more sandwiches (I had intended more sandwiches, but ran out of time, which is why there was mackerel pâté for lunch. But we had left-over meringues and chocolate cake, which is weird). Also less fizz, more grape juice.
This is how we came to discover that rioja goes really well with smoked mackerel pâté, which we would not have expected. Sue said "You're going to write about this in LiveJournal, aren't you?" Oh, yes!
Finally, there was leftover television: after lunch, we watched Doctor Who, which we had recorded. Probably when we reach the end of the two-parter, I'll be exasperated all over again, and there were things about it I thought we becoming a bit repetitious, and others where something is being very heavily and unsubtly signalled (so that it will be equally irritating in different ways whether it happens or not). But for the time being, I thought it a fun episode, and we were all sorry when it finished.
