Ada Lovelace Day was earlier this week; I didn't post then because I didn't have anything to say about the achievements of women in technology and science.

But I just came across the story of Henrietta Lacks. It's only tangentially relevant, and it's probably one of those great discoveries that everyone but me knew about all along, but...

If you didn't know about it all along, you might still have come across
Rebecca Skloot's book on the subject, which is new enough that it hasn't yet been published in the UK. But that's not where I found the story; I read about it in Nancy Banks-Smith's review of a television programme from 1997 - Adam Curtis's The Way of All Flesh, in fact, which the wonders of the internet have just enabled me to watch.

Thank you so much for the link to the documentary! I'd read with great interest about the book, but I hadn't seen the film.
