That is serious lichen. Nice.

Skekklers - wonderful photograph! go look! - are guisers, and wear a costume made of straw.

I think the first I ever heard of guisers—or at least my first encounter with the term—was in Mollie Hunter's A Stranger Came Ashore (1975), whose climax takes place among the guising for Up Helly Aa.
