This morning, we - [livejournal.com profile] desperance, you will be appalled - ran out of coffee. I'm appalled myself. The absence of a decent supermarket in Durham is playing havoc with my shopping skills, plus the industrial quantities of decaff in the cupboard (brought back from France) masked the absence of the hard stuff.

Add that to the fact that I am now using the third coffee pot of the month: and when I say "month", I don't mean thirty days, I mean November.

Last week I broke the coffee pot - that is, the glass jug into which I filter coffee morning and evening and sometimes in between as well. I'm philosophical about this. We'd had it a while, we use it, I wash it up, these are circumstances in which glass breaks. So on Saturday we went to the kitchenware shop and replaced it. I got pennies change from £10, which I thought was fair.

And on Tuesday I broke the new coffee pot. Both times, it was an odd little fracture: a chip the size of my thumbnail removed from the neck just above the collar (the second time, a triangle removed from the flared collar with the point towards the rim, so that the rim appeared unbroken. I didn't run my finger over it to check whether this was illusion).

Yesterday I trawled the charity shops of the North Road, and brought home a coffee pot - a similar design to its predecessors, but taller and narrower. (I had taken the precaustion of taking the filter with me, so I knew this was not a problem). This time I got pennies change from £1, which I thought was more than fair.

There's a song which the Bears sing:
What I want is a proper cup of coffee,
Made in a proper copper coffee pot.
I may be off my dot,
But I want a cup of coffee from a proper coffee pot.
Iron coffee pots and tin coffee pots,
They're no use to me...
The jury is out on glass ones.
