Home again
Oct. 19th, 2008 05:18 pmThis sunset picture (with duck) was taken on our last evening in the Netherlands, so one way and another it seems appropriate to this "the holidays are over; I'm home" post.
It was a good holiday, overall. That is, there were many good things in it, and some of them were very good. There were also some frustrating and annoying things in it, and some things that didn't work out as we'd expected - in a negative way, mostly by being harder work than they should have been. Then again, there were things that worked out as we hadn't expected, by being fun and unlooked for, and the good things outweighed the bad in both number and degree. We covered only a fraction of the distance we covered this time last year, in about two thirds of the time, but we seemed to spend more time on the road - often very beautiful roads, and ablaze with autumn - and less time walking, picnicking, shopping for treats (even sending postcards).
Curiously, considering that we set off with an overall plan - to follow the river Meuse from source to end - I look back at the trip with less sense of a unity than on either of the previous two holidays. I feel less urge to write a comprehensive account of it; although this may just be a subconscious reluctance to open a third 'holidays' tab! There are some things I want to write about, and there will doubtless be more photographs as I sort through them, but I'm relaxed about that being rather more random than the last two jaunts (which I have not despaired of completing).
Meanwhile, I'm home, and starting to pick up on life - after all, the Book Festival has already started!
