Puffin in boat with banner reading 'One Shilling & sixpence The continuing process of cataloging my collection of Puffin Story Books has reached PS39: Columbus Sails by C. Walter Hodges. Not my favourite book, but I am beguiled by the puffin logo as it appears on the back cover: isn't he irresistible?

ETA: In fact...

Well, using the first calculator I could find (http://www.measuringworth.com/ppoweruk/?redirurl=calculators/ppoweruk/) suggests that 1/6 in 1947 is the equivalent of £2.11 now - which is cheaper than your average paperback. [livejournal.com profile] durham_rambler did some calculations a while back, and while I can remember the exact prices or years he was looking at, we came to the conclusion that paperbacks had got more expensive over time, and hardbacks cheaper.

I'm sorry we won't have the opportunity to have this conversation properly this weekend. Hope the condition is continuing to respond to treatment.
