What a flag! Glorious imagery. I love the sainthoody feeling it gives off, almost like the old revolutionary pieces done in a "social realism" style from behind the iron curtain when it was still hanging around, but astoundingly little display of muscle, here sadly;=)
Yes, these banners owe something to Soviet realism, and something to Methodist Christianity... Sorry about the absence of muscle - next time I'll look out for that!
So marvelous! What does it say on the ribbons of the Saintly Lady's costume? And are there words on the ribbons of the Maypole around which those wholesome children are dancing?
You have sharp eyes! The lady (is she Education? She's carrying a torch) wears the words "Light - Education - Industrial Organisation - Political Action - Real International" and the ribbons of the maypole are: Beauty, Fellowship, Heath, Art and Science.
And here's the other side (http://www.flickr.com/photos/she_who_must/817654068/), which is also good!
This banner is just gorgeous! And how fab is it that St George himself is slaying a dragon on the reverse... well, one expects it to be St George, though in a Health & Efficiency pose. (Link, um...not so safe for work.)
Soviet Realism + Christian Methodist, with overtones of Temperance and a touch of Pre-Raphealites meets Boy's Own Wartime Annual.
