There was vegetable curry for dinner tonight, and I was blowing my nose from time to time, as you do. Suddenly there was blood everywhere, and it wouldn't stop, like a tap that's been turned on.

We did what we always do in a medical emergency, and called Meg (mother of three, ex-nurse), who told me not to lie down, sit over a bucket and pinch the bridge of your nose - hard - until she arrived. I did, she did, and eventually it stopped, leaving me bloody but unbowed, if rather nervous.

Meg has had a day of medical emergencies: we cancelled our date for an early morning swim as she was very anxious about her dog and wanted to take him to the vet as soon as they opened. The verdict now is that he's very highly strung (no news there) and that he was probably upset by the earthquake.

What a dramatic evening! I trust you are recovering from the loss of blood.

I'm tempted to reply that it's not lost; I know exactly where it all went! But it's all been washed off now, and I'm feeling fine (apart from not being allowed to blow my nose).

Please not to leak; it creates mess, and worries the locals.
