An item on the six o' clock news yesterday announced that there is to be a remake of the classic movie, The Wizard of Oz.

Why is this a news story, rather than a show business press release? Because there hasn't been a remake of The Wizard of Oz before? Evidently not.

So far I'm just muttering about the decline of news values, the silly season and who cares anyway, but then the newsreader adds that the film is to be made by Todd Mcfarlane.

What? Not this Todd McFarlane?

Yes, apparently so. And the plan is that the film will be "darker" and "edgier" than the original, more of a sequel than a remake. Right. No doubt Dorothy will find herself in a hotel in Austria, where she will meet Alice and Wendy and I wonder what might happen next...

She'll start doing cocaine, and will tell her new analyst, Dr. Freud, all about it. The Cowardly Lion will change his name to Neville Chamberlain and enter politics. The Scarecrow will be involved in the creation of the Treaty of Locarno (somehow I have the thing set in the 1920s, which is at least closer to the original publication date of the book) and will throw away his new brain after seeing the results. And the Tin Man will move to Hollywood and have a cameo in Charlie Chaplin's Modern Times.

I suspect that this is closer to the original than Todd McF's bondage version - and sounds a more interesting movie, too.
