Monsoon season

We've just been out to lunch, and noticed, leaving the restaurant, that the rain had begun again: big, wet drops, but far enough apart that I was able to walk from the restaurant door to the car in pleasant summer rain, my dress barely damp. Five or ten minutes later, when our kind hosts dropped us at our door, the rain was so heavy that we were both drenched in the 20 yards between car and front door. A river flows down our road, my dress is soaked at shoulder and hem, and I've just been round the house closing windows, each of which has an area of damp just inside it - each one, that is, except the bathroom window, where there is nothing that would be affected by water.

And we're going out again this evening...

That's funny. It's raining very hard now in New York City, and in Boston we're supposed to be getting heavy rains this afternoon.

I know it's traditional to laugh at the English summer, and we are accustomed to rain, but this has been a summer of very abrupt and heavy rainfall.
