Odd the questions you never ask me, isn't it? Having been to university there, and later having had a union office in the Jewellery Quarter, I knew it was there. But in my day, I think it was workshops in run-down buildings rather than showrooms and trails.
Hmph. You, m'dear, need to read Jenny Uglow's The Lunar Men. For 150 years Birmingham was the Capital of British skilled manufacture of pretty much everything.
I shall look forward to the results of your photo expotition - and I envy you the singleness of purpose to undertake such a thing: I'm getting more into the habit of carrying a camera, but still regard photography as an irritating habit that must be kept in check, lest it blight a perfectly good outing.
Ah, I knew of Brum as scientific and industrial, but hadn't put jewellery in that context. It makes sense, though - industrial jewellery, brummagem ware...
Hmmm, my experience doesn't feel a bit like your description :)
There were 4 of us exploring Cov city centre and we plan to do the Jewellery Qtr together. What we find happens is that it slows us down in a very positive way. When one person is taking photos the others are standing around chatting so it's very sociable. Also, if you're standing around waiting, you tend to be looking at things you'd otherwise have walked straight past and lots of interesting discoveries happen that way. And taking photos with others is a good way to have your view of the world challenged and expanded.

In other words, it's fun and relaxing!
