The BT engineer, on his way to this morning's site visit (i.e., on his way here) called in at the exchange for a quick check. Noticing that one of the wires was loose, he pushed it in more securely. This seems to have done the trick.

shewhomust spoke too soon. The broadband connection was down again this morning. It is a mystery to me how it can fail so frequently. We have an old broadband modem that I tried, to rule out the possibility that it was our equipment. That did not work either. Ho, hum. The delights of dial-up access.
