File under 'First World Problems':

As [personal profile] helenraven pointed out, Ocado deliveries are pretty much available, for a price, and yesterday I secured one for this morning. I waa in no hurry to do a big supermarket shop, except that we were pretty much out of grapefruit juice, which is part of our breakfast routine and not easily obtained locally. I could certainly put together a reasonable order, with a bottle or two to tide us over until the next Wine Society delivery (which is another story) and enough fresh things to put off the evil moment of going to a shop ...

This morning Ocado sent through the order confirmation: they were very sorry, but they couldn't supply the pie I had ordered for tonight's dinner (or any other pie, apparently). Less inconveniently, but also less intelligibly:
Sorry but we’ve had to swap:
• 1 x Bertolli Original Spread
with
• 1 x Bertolli Original Spread

(Change of size; I now have a giant tub of margarine).

[personal profile] durham_rambler was in meetings all day, so I was on my own for taking delivery, which would have been no big ceal had someone at Ocado not managed to empty a pint pot of cream into - and I don't know how this happened - several bags. It's a judgement on me for ordering the big pot of cream, but they didn't have a medium one, and small does not last us long in these days of summer berries.

I had been pondering the question Do you wipe down everything that enters the house? (I know people who do.) Now I know the answer: No, only the things that are covered in cream.

Talking of the crème de la crème, the government announced that pubs would open for us to celebrate July 4th (Boris is American, after all), that the country was emerging from hibernation, and then was shocked when the country rushed en masse to the seaside. They are now threatening to send in the police, to close the beaches -

Yes, we will fight them on the beaches ...

The promised thunderstorm arrived just before dinner, rumbled impressively and rained heavily but briefly. It seems to have stopped now, but I hope there will be more.

There is certainly more rain here. We had some yesterday and then it was hot and horribly humid. We had the fan in the bedroom on all night, which meant I slept through, which I haven't been for the last couple of nights. But this morning it is raining, which is a great relief.

Sorry to hear about the great cream disaster, but at least you can laugh about it. I was boiling milk yesterday (for a rice pudding cake) and left it unattended, and there was boiled and scorched milk all over the stove. M very kindly cleaned it all up before he went to bed.

I was genuinely shocked to see a photo of Bournemouth and a few other beaches absolutely heaving with people. Also shocked to see some photos from Texas, ditto. And the litter they leave! I don't understand what is wrong with people.
