I am not making this up. It was mentioned (without explanation, as if everyone knows all about this) in a Guardian review of Sam Lee's Singing with Nightingales, in which it is played by Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh (and there's a video of him playing one on that site.

Indeed. I haven't had time to hunt down much hardanger d'amore, but what I heard sounded good.
