We rose late on Saturday morning, after the concert and the driving home of the previous night. It was nine o' clock before we opened the front door, and discovered there was no milk on the doorstep. The milkman had definitely called, because he had left the month's bill. Had this confused him, so that he had forgotten to leave the milk? Or had he left it, and some passer-by helped themself? Who knows? Luckily there was enough milk in the fridge to make our breakfast coffee.

We set the alarm clock, and rose early this morning. We wouldn't normally swim on a Tuesday in term-time, as it's the day the University occupies an extra lane of the pool: but Monday was a Bank Holiday, and Friday is the morning after the election night before, which narrows the options. So we set off bravely, even though it was raining heavily and the windscreen wipers were clunking back and forth - only, no, wait, that wasn't the windscreen wipers, that was a flat tire. Had we driven, without realising it, over something sharp and jagged? Who knows? Luckily our preferred mechanic was able to replace it on the spot.

So I am about to set the alarm clock, and tomorrow we will rise early and set off once more for the pool. Will we make it, or will we hit a third early morning snag to complete the set? Who knows?

Maybe it was the broken milk bottle dropped by a fleeing delinquent that cut up the tyre? If a man with a glistening hairdo and moustache moves in next door and starts making questions, you know, you are on TV!

That would add a pleasing unity to the narrative, certainly.

Feel free to pass it on to her! (It's a steamroller, of course).

Did you ever sort this out? What was the mystery of the milkman?

It remains a mystery. We suspect a thirsty passer-by. Certainly next door's milk delivery had been as usual.
