What I have been doing lately: the more pictures, fewer words version:

As I said, we have been to Sheffield. Launch party for a long-awaited new book by a client: The Last Room by Danuta Reah, and I am looking forward in equal measure to reading it and to a major overhaul of her website - the excuse for going quite a long way for the launch was that it would allow us to meet and discuss updates which have been imminent for altogether too long. Sheffield would be a great place to spend some time with a camera, and we indulged in a small wander around Sharrow Vale, the area where the launch was held:

Another reason why I hate wheelie bins

A steep hill up and fine views over the city, redbrick terraces, a very bijou shopping area, some fun murals and altogether too many wheelie bins (I hate wheelie bins. They are hard to manoeuvre, they make a mess of our streets, and we put up with it because the alternative is generating less waste and having it collected more frequently - unthinkable!).

Causeway

On the way home we lunched in Richmond, at the old station. We stopped on impulse in Piercebridge, and followed the signs to the Roman Bridge. It used to cross the Tees, but the Tees has moved, so it crosses a green field: some heaps of stones, the flagged causeway which ran under the bridge and at the far end the base of one of the piers, its lines as clean as if the stones had been cut yesterday.

Since then, we've had house guests: [livejournal.com profile] durham_rambler's brother and sister-in-law arrived on Friday afternoon, which gave us time for a whirlwind of cleaning and some essential shopping before they arrived - then a cup of tea and a quick visit to the Botanic Gardens. Brother is a keen birdwatcher and nature photographer, and asked if, despite the forecast of thunderstorms, we could get out onto the moors and look for birds. So on Saturday morning we went up to Waskerley, and had a close encounter with some curlews that were hanging about just as you turn off the road towards the car park by the cycle way:

Curlew

A very interesting and enjoyable evening with people who were childhood neighbours of [livejournal.com profile] durham_rambler and his brother - dinner at Café 21, which was evidently a good choice. All visitors have now moved on, and this evening [livejournal.com profile] durham_rambler and I are off to Gateshead in search of music: John Renbourn and Wizz Jones at the Old Town Hall.
