No, I hadn't forgotten that, but I don't think the dates work - though I would be interested to know when this edit was done! It's possible, I suppose, that the author - I suppose it was Travers herself - is attributing her own wistfukness about bananas to the children, who by this time were unlikely to share it. poliphilo and I have the same memories of how a child in the 1950s saw things.
You're right, though, to say that the best bananas are not the utilitarian fruit I think of, and may reasonably be seen as tropical exotica!
