Yesterday morning we woke to see snow lying on the ground and rooftops. Not much snow, but lying. In October.

This morning the radio told us to put our clocks back, summertime is over.

Oh wow. That must have been pretty. I should go and check some of the Durham piccie blogs.

And we're here preparing for a hurricane. It's supposed to flow directly over us. This will be an adventure...

In Idaho when I was a kid (the 70's), it would always snow once in October, then not snow again until November, when it would start in earnest. I suspect the October snow was planned by mothers, who could then insist we wear a coat over our Halloween costumes, thus ruining them for coolness factor.

Do you actually say "A penny short and a day late", or were you translating? I've only ever heard - and used - "A day late and a dollar short"...

That's the continental climate for you!

When I was a kid, we didn't have Hallowe'en - but I don't recall having snow for Bonfire Night, either!

I wasn't consciously translating; I'm trying to think where I got it from, and it may have been from you. On the other hand, a dollar short sounds too much...

Snow! Goodness. We are definitely cold and the leaves are falling, but so far no snow.

There wasn't much, and it's gone now, but still, yes, snow!
