I had my cataract operation this morning, and it seems to have gone well - witness, I am home and doing a little light typing.

The weirdest thing about the whole experience -

Well, no, the weirdest thing was lying there staring into the bright light and seeing the dome of clear stuff (presumably not glass) that the nice surgeon was about to insert into my eye. That'd be hard to outweird. But:

The second weirdest thing was that some sort of music was playing in the operating theatre (I don't think it was radio, there weren't spoken bits in between the tracks) and the first thing I heard was an easy-listening rendition of Buddy, Can You Spare a Dime?

We are now in the period of seeing how it goes: regular eye drops, don't rub your eye, can't see through my glasses with my left eye (can't see without glasses with my right eye), don't go swimming and don't rub your eye.

I'll keep you posted.

Congratulations!

can't see through my glasses with my left eye (can't see without glasses with my right eye)

Now may be the time to buy that monocle you've always dreamed of.

I'm glad that all went smoothly enough that you can cope with a little light posting. I imagine that the not-rubbing-the-eye is going to be tricky. Do you know how long that period is likely to last?

And master the quizzical expression that goes with it!

In theory, until the follow-up appointment at the end of the month. (By which time, of course, we will have been to Cornwall and back!)

It's a matter of hygiene, not fragility, so not quite as alarming as it sounds. But there's nothing makes me want to rub my eye like being told not to...

Take care, and, erm.... Don't rub your eye. :D

Would you go for Marlene Dietrich or Lord Peter Wimsey?

Here's to eagle eyes!

Nine

Sounds like a success. When do you do the next eye?

Congratulations! Is it possible to remove just the one lens from your glasses without doing fatal damage? (I don't mean you personally but your optician, who has the right tools.)

When do you do the next eye?

When it needs it! There's the start of a cataract there, but no predicting how fast it will develop. The surgeon said some people go 10 or 15 years between the two eyes, but they are the exception - my guess is sooner rather than later, because this first one seems to have developed quite quickly, but I'm not thinking about that right now...

As a temporary measure, that's possible. As it happens, [livejournal.com profile] durham_rambler is currently experimenting with old pairs of glasses.

At present I have only very blurred vision in the left eye; it's still accommodating to the nex lens, I assume. And the complication is that we are away from home for the next week, for GirlBear's birthday treat - by the time we return, it'll be only a couple of days until my follow-up visit. After which, yes, that's the strategy I have in mind.

Yea, I meant temporarily -- after things have settled in, if you still need a lens for that eye, I assume you'll have a new one made.

I'm glad this won't impede your upcoming trip! It's amazing what they can do as low-impact outpatient treatment these days, isn't it? I had cataract surgery when I was 5 (congenital) and I was in the hospital, then had to stay home from school, and had this humongous patch thing on for at least a week (though maybe that was because I was 5 years old?). Times have changed for the better. :-)

My inner 5-year old hankers after that eye-patch! But my outer adult is very happy tp be living in the future.

And yes, considering how crazy our schedule has been this year, I am amazed at how it all seems to be working out...

I've not reported them well. I did some intersting travel around Sydney, for my friends are history buffs as well as SF geeks and south coast NSW is very beautiful. We had golden sands to ourselves and the ocean sung us to sleep (and then the tide changed and we all woke up and had to try again).

If you want a tiny Pacific shell (not spectacular - no big shells around that part of the coast) I have one I can send you.

Impatient to be given the all clear and order new glasses: the good eye is having a hard time seeing through the very thick lens it used to need!
