(A propos of which, I have just read On Stranger Tides. Which is ... really rather good, and I have no idea why Tim didn't sue the studio over the first three movies, rather than waiting for them to do the decent thing and pay him for the fourth...)

I believe you. Since I have never read the book nor seen the movie, would you mind explaining this argument a little?

Umm... The argument is an exaggeration; I am absolutely certain that I know exactly why he didn't sue, because suing is a nightmare and only the lawyers ever win (unless you're Harlan). And making a specific case in respect of any of the first three movies would have been very difficult, because there is little congruence between their storylines and the plot of the novel. But, oh but: the look-and-feel of the novel, the exuberant madness of its invention, the whole pirate/voudou/zombie confluence thing - well, once you know the novel, you can't see any of the movies without seeing absolutely where Tim's creativity is being woven into them.

As I say: it's not a legal argument, and a court would stifle it. But I'm really, really glad that his work was recognised in the end.
