Latest from the pool: there was complaining over the absence of music, and there was an opinion poll consisting of a piece of paper at the reception desk, where people were invited to write their preferences. We happened to speak to the pool manager earlier this week: she says that there is a narrow majority of people in favour of music, but they will still draw up a schedule whereby there will be music at certain times, and that these times are unlikely to include before 9 am (she didn't say why, and I took care not to ask). She also confirms that the pool is covered by the PRS licence which permits music for the gym, exercise classes etc - and that while the licence is expensive, it isn't something they could do without.

Latest from the bank: the unauthorised transactions have been credited back to my account, and my new debit card has arrived; the PIN which will allow me to use it is expected to take a further three working days. Pity this is a bank holiday weekend...

Latest from the streets of Durham: Inspector George Gently, a television series I have never seen, and have to concentrate not to refer to as "Dirk Gently" is filmed in Durham City, and this week, for the first time, they are filming in our street - precisely, in the house two doors down from us, which is for sale. On Monday night they set up a light - very tall and very bright - and filmed in the back alley; now they are filming inside the house, have commandeered all the parking spaces and set up camp on the pavement outside. They seem pretty much harmless, though I feel rather overlooked.

Latest walk: we didn't, really. Saturday was buffeted by strong winds, Sunday morning was a fierce shower of rain, so we set aside plans to walk and went back to Beamish (once you've bought a ticket, it's valid for a year, so why not?) and explored the mine, the pit village and the home farm. It was fun, but I'm ready to walk a little further, before I forget how it's done. Maybe tomorrow...

Latest from Eurovision: Azerbaijan having won this year's song contest will host next year's. The Guardian has a travel piece on places to see. Baku was the pleasant surprise of our trip to Soviet Transcaucasia in 1984; I'd happily go back and see more, but the article manages to make the place sound wonderful without hiding the fact that if you aren't representing a major newspaper, you'll have to make all the arrangements yourself, which is a bit daunting.
