This morning, for the first time this winter, we had to scrape the frost off the car before we set off for the pool; the sun was rising, and the castle and cathedral stood out against great veils of rosy cloud.

I have opened the first door of the advent calendar, and there are Christmas puddings boiling downstairs: big Daddy Pudding in the pressure cooker, medium-sized Mummy Pudding in a saucepan and four little Baby Puddings in the oval Le Creuset casserole. Memo to self: buy another one pint pudding basin.

Same here. First frosty day in Oxfordshire. I might have to evolve a new route to work. The last part of my journey involves a narrow country lane. Last winter I skidded alarmingly on its ungritted surface when my car thermomenter read -2.5 C This morning it was -1 C and three cars were in the ditch with a police car in attendance.

Slush at the side of the roads in and out of Bothal today. Did that slow doen the SUV drivers? Hey, I can always get into the hedge out of their way, can't I.

You can never have too many pudding basins. Get a two pint one as well.

We're hoping to be on Fair Isle in early May, so it depends how late in April - I hope we can coincide!

There's a new café: in Neville Street (Durham Institute of Arts - which I think used to be the Fishtank. No web site, but a Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=155126725465&v=info))...
