For an awkward couple of hours last week we actually thought we had double booked ourselves for yesterday, having accepted invitations to not one but two parties on the same day. Investigation established that one was an afternoon and the other an evening party, so we could go to both. So that's what we did, and enjoyed ourselves greatly at both.

There was just enough time between the two to go to John Lewis and look at carpets and curtains and mattresses - because that's how cool we are! Results were mixed. We have booked someone to come and measure up the carpet - suppliers seem not to trust us to do this ourselves, and they may have a point, but it does prolong the process - with a promise that they will bring with them samples of the two carpets we are considering (naturally I incline towards the more expensive one, but I'd like to see the colours in context). We have deferred choosing curtains until the carpet is laid, so that we know not only what paint and wallpaper we have to harmonise with, but also what shade of carpet. I was more inclined to accept this procrastination as I think it's going to be quite difficult to find curtains which don't fight with the wallpaper (if this were website design, I would take the wallpaper pattern and reverse the colours so that the curtains were a negative of the wallpaper - but it seems you can't do that in real life). And we lay on a number of beds, but deferred ordering a mattress until this morning (but that's now done, though it was harder work than it should have been).

After which, we were ready to party again!

Once upon a time, summer brought respite from football: there was cricket and Wimbledon, but at least you didn't have the tedium of football to contend with. Now football goes on all year round: Newcastle yesterday was full of people wearing black and white stripes.

As if this weren't enough, we are also overrun with reminiscences of some match from 50 years ago. Not just massive coverage in the sports supplement (I don't mind what they put in the sports supplement) but items in the news bulletins (it seems someone recorded the radio commentary, and this is very important).

And now, the last straw, it is the hidden theme of the prize crossword. I am not impressed.
